Overshadowed by the motorboat-heavy and less-paddler-friendly St. Johns River, Black Creek is a favorite of greater Jacksonville kayakers and canoeists. A tributary of the St. Johns, Black Creek ?ows through a moist, tree-canopied ravine cutting beneath sandy pine and scrub-oak forests punctuated with plenty of houses. Far from being the only Black Creek in Florida, it gets its moniker from coffee-colored tannic waters colored that way by decaying vegetation. Originating near the community of Penney Farms, Black Creek snakes its way some 20 miles from FL 16 to empty into the St. Johns River. Paddlers primarily ply the ?rst 14 miles, as the lowermost 6 miles are extremely broad, tidal, and used extensively by large motorized craft.
