The St. Marys River is one of Florida’s ?nest touring streams. Originating in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp as the North Prong of the St. Marys, the river soon forms the Florida–Georgia boundary. Downstream, the Middle Prong St. Marys adds its ?ow from the east side of Buckhead Swamp in the Big Gum Swamp of Florida’s Osceola National Forest. After the two prongs merge, onward the St. Marys River ?ows in a giant horseshoe to end its run at the Atlantic Ocean near Fernandina Beach. The St. Marys has been considered for Wild and Scenic status, and concern for the river has evolved into an organization known as the St. Marys River Management Committee, which seeks to meld the interests of concerned citizens and adjoining government entities. They produce a good-quality river map. For the map and more information about the river basin, visit
