The Middle Prong is a wild and swift stream, making a twisting, slender course through a corridor of stalwart cypress and tupelo trees, which forms midstream obstacles that the paddler must negotiate. The Middle Prong recalls its sister the North Prong of the St. Marys River. However, instead of draining Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp as the North Prong does, the Middle Prong drains Florida’s Big Gum Swamp and Buckhead Swamp of the Osceola National Forest. Because the river ?ows through the national forest, the remote banks of the Middle Prong are home to deer, bears, and lesser mammals and birds, including the red-cockaded woodpecker.
