The Suwannee River is Florida’s most notable paddling waterway. Neither grandiose in size, nor in length, nor in riverside towns, it is the epitome of a true Southern waterway. Spelled a variety of ways, the name Suwannee is common throughout the southeastern United States, but Florida’s Suwannee is synonymous with Dixie and the Old South. The Suwannee is one of the ?nest touring rivers around and a ?rst-rate adventure when paddled in its entirety. Mostly ?atwater, it has one recommended portage at Big Shoals via a marked portage trail. None of the other shoals are suf?ciently challenging to cause a problem. Boat ramps and paddler launches are frequent along the river, allowing trips of varied lengths. Limited supply runs can be made at White Springs, Branford, and Fanning Springs—all river towns—and private and public campgrounds.
