This is one of two rivers named Withlacoochee in Florida; they’re commonly referred to using both their shared name and their locations. A large and signi?cant tributary of the Suwannee, this northern Withlacoochee River is a state-designated paddling trail with Georgia beginnings. It drains lands northwest of Valdosta and meanders south for 70 miles to enter the Sunshine State. Not surprisingly, the Withlacoochee resembles its mother stream, the Suwannee: limestone outcroppings border high banks where coffee-colored waters ?ow steadily past ?anks of tupelo and cypress trees, broken by occasional shoals that can liven up a paddle. These rocky shoals leave the Withlacoochee to smaller boats. However, you may see local anglers vying for bass, bream, and cat?sh from johnboats.
