The Aucilla originates just south of Boston, Georgia, and exhibits many characteristics as it heads south, sometimes posing as a lake, other times as a marsh, sometimes ?owing aboveground, sometimes underground. Just north of US 27 in Florida, the Aucilla becomes what we paddlers imagine a river to be and proceeds about 30 miles until it goes underground again. The river ends its underground sojourn 5 miles south of its sink and quickly meets the waters of the Wacissa, ?owing through a man-made canal on to the Gulf. Remains of two man-made dams on the upper section may provide a ?ne break-in whitewater paddle for novices. But where the Tallahassee Hills drop off the limestone karst, a stretch of real whitewater appears, dropping 8–10 feet over 30 yards: Big Rapid.
