The headwaters of the Sopchoppy River are found in the Apalachicola National Forest’s Grand Bay Swamp. From there, the Sopchoppy ?ows for 50 miles—much of its uppermost waters almost impossible to paddle—to meet its mother stream the Ochlockonee River at Ochlockonee Bay. Lying almost completely within the boundaries of the Apalachicola National Forest, the Sopchoppy gathers as the East Branch and West Branch before merging north of the Bradwell Bay Wilderness, and becoming of interest to wilderness river-?oaters. The river is noted not only for its continuous twists and turns but also extensive and unique cypress formations; high, mossy limestone banks; and a surprisingly swift current.
