The Chipola River is born in southeast Alabama and ?ows southward into Florida, where 51 miles of the river are an of?cial state paddling trail. The entire length of the Chipola from its headwaters to its mother stream, the Apalachicola River, is 80 miles. However, not the entire river ?ows above ground—at Florida Caverns State Park it moves under the earth. Beyond that, part of the waterway slows to become Dead Lake. The portion that is state paddling trail has segments that are a limestone-bordered, tree-?anked, fast-moving stream, while other sections are more riverine, wide, and slow ?owing, with sporadic cliffs, caves, and bluffs. Along the way you will encounter several springs and the infamous Look and Tremble Rapid.
