Holmes Creek comes to be near Fadette, Alabama, and ?ows a short distance before entering the Sunshine State near Graceville. Although numerous tributaries add ?ow, Holmes Creek remains a diminutive and unnavigable stream until magnitude 2 Cypress Springs contributes its volume above Vernon, where Holmes Creek becomes an easily paddleable waterway. At normal ?ows, Holmes Creek exhibits a clearish-green tint. This clear water and a variety of vegetation make this state-designated paddling trail a photogenic stream. The river flows through the Apalachicola National Forest for over 50 miles with only one bridge and a very limited number of boat landings. Since the Ochlockonee is prone to extensive flooding, there are few houses or other encroachments along the banks. Vegetation on the Ochlockonee is characterized by upland hard-woods and pine forests on the higher banks banded by a corridor of lowland trees such as cypress, black gum, birch, and willow near the water.
