The Shoal River, the Yellow River’s little brother and primary tributary, also originates in some of Florida’s highest terrain (Britton Hill, at 345 feet, is Florida’s high point and is within the Shoal’s drainage system). Formed at the confluence of Big Swamp Creek and Gum Creek, the Shoal works west for the first 15 miles, picking up major tributaries such as Turkey Creek and Pond Creek along the way. Draining these hills leaves the tan-colored Shoal a fast-moving, sand-bottomed, and shallow waterway. Civilization has caught up with the upper Shoal west of DeFuniak Springs and north of Mossy Head, and there have been some disputes about launches.
