The Yellow River watershed harbors Florida’s loftiest terrain as well as hills in Alabama’s Conecuh National Forest. Fed by a veinlike network of tributaries, the Yellow River winds its way to Pensacola Bay, at one point forming the boundary of Eglin Air Force Base. Though not protected by a large state forest like the Blackwater River, the fast-moving Yellow meanders through a quiet part of the state, availing in excess of 50 miles of quality paddling for kayakers and canoeists. The Yellow gets its name from tan sands spread along its river bottoms, sandbars, and banks. The clearer water and less acidity result in richer aquatic life than the Blackwater. Thus the richer aquatic life moves up the food chain, whereby more birds, turtles, ?sh, and even alligators call the Yellow home.
