The Ogeechee is Georgia’s only major riverway that stretches from the Atlantic to the Piedmont unimpeded by dams, forming a rare native environment for indigenous wildlife and a spawning grounds for sturgeon and mullet. Partially spring fed in the upper reaches, the stream runs shallow and rocky in the Class I–II Piedmont section. Upon reaching the Coastal Plain the Ogeechee exhibits characteristics typical of both Coastal Plain blackwater and Coastal Plain alluvial streams. At times the stream is deep and well channeled with bluffs occasionally rising from streamside. At other times the Ogeechee passes through broad expanses of lowland swamp.
