The Oconee River is one of Georgia’s major rivers. More than 200 miles of river start south of Athens with the joining of the North and Middle Oconee Rivers. From Athens to Lake Oconee, the river has been smoothed by a series of dams, and very little whitewater remains save for an occasional rif?e. Below Lake Sinclair, the river passes over a couple small shoals (and yet another dam) before entering the Coastal Plain where it winds past sandbars and through deeply wooded terrain to its meeting with the Ocmulgee, forming the Altamaha River.
