The Nottely River is a hospitable, small stream with its headwaters high in the mountains of Union County southeast of Blairsville. It flows northwestward across the county and is the major source stream for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Nottely Lake. Vistas of mountain farmland on both sides of the river frequently give way to houses and businesses located near and sometimes almost in the river. Most of the river’s mild rapids are located in the first 2 miles; the deepest woodlands are found in the final 2 miles above the lake. The river is named for an early Cherokee Indian settlement on the stream near the current Georgia–North Carolina border.
