An intimate stream of primeval beauty, Brier Creek’s headwaters rise from springs near the fall line west of Augusta. Unlike most Georgia rivers of its latitude, Brier Creek threads a tightly winding path through dense vegetation reminiscent of the Coastal Plain. Shallow, sloping banks of red clay cradle the stream; trees festooned with Spanish moss arch overhead. Paddling trips through the swampy upper regions are possible in high water, particularly around the town of Keysville. The channel here is small, and it takes some effort to discern when the creek level is so high as to be spilling out of the banks and into the surrounding swampy forest. In the section described here, Brier is a sizable creek, averaging 30 to 50 feet wide in the upper sections and up to 60 to 85 feet at the mouth, where it mingles with the Savannah River in a lowland swamp.
