You’ll find a little of each of the main ingredients of the Everglades coast within this one five-day journey. Starting and finishing at Everglades City, the trip begins by traversing a region of mangrove keys to reach the outer coast with its shelly shorelines and sand spits, where you can watch the sun set into the sea. After looping south on this outer fringe, you leave behind the open horizon and run deep into the Everglades until you reach brackish water and finally float onto clear freshwater right at the border of the Everglade Prairie, with its giant lake of saw grass. (Unfortunately you are unlikely to see much of the saw grass, which lies hidden behind the taller waterfront fringe of mangrove that lines even the tightest creeks.) Your return to Everglades City follows the northern section of the Wilderness Waterway, leading through open lakes and narrow twisting channels. The full Wilderness Waterway links Everglades City to Flamingo, about 99 miles to the south, so you are more likely to see a little more boat traffic on this final part of the route.
