This route makes a circuit of Tarpon Bay, a 2-mile-long bay on the north coast of Sanibel Island. Tarpon Bay is almost completely enclosed by mangroves. The mangroves and the wildlife that lives in them are what make this area special. The water is shallow, and a string of small sand banks tufted with mangroves in the middle of the bay provide protection for birds to roost and nest, out of reach of raccoons and bobcats. There are mangrove tunnels and mazes appear in two parts of the bay. The first of these is a way-marked route called Commodore Creek, which traces a beautiful convoluted channel through a maze of red mangrove tunnels. Be alert for wildlife. Several times I stopped paddling and allowed the current to drift me within feet of herons and egrets as they stilted across the loops of mangrove prop roots, searching for food. The way-marks ensure you can get back out easily. At the far end of Tarpon Bay is an even greater area of mangrove maze—with no way-marks. Here I encountered vultures, egrets, and herons as I weaved my own route through the labyrinth. Mullet were leaping and splashing, adding to the sound of birdcalls and the wind through the mangrove.
