Sanibel Island lies at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River and offers two very different experiences to the paddler. To the north are shallow, sheltered waters with creeks extending far into mangrove forest, and to the south are exposed sand beaches. I like both, and I enjoy the contrast, so I’ve combined the two in this cruise that can be completed as a vigorous one-day trip for a competent paddler. However, the trip conveniently falls into two parts, each long enough to make a day trip for the less energetic. One trip explores the sand, the other the mangrove. Local restrictions prohibit overnight camping on the beach, so you’ll need to arrange for a pickup if you choose the two-part option. The water is shallow, with exposed mud banks and thickets of mangrove that offer perfect shelter and feeding conditions for birds such as herons and ibis. Sanibel is also well known for its Gulf Coast beaches. The beach is littered with beautiful shells, small and large. The shell museum on the island can help you identify what you find. The lighthouse at the eastern tip of Sanibel was built in 1884 and became the focus for a small settlement into the early 1900s. The lighthouse is surrounded by trees, just a few yards from the shore.
