This is a sheltered water trip in the shallow water of Gasparilla Sound and Island Bay in Charlotte Harbor. Advanced paddlers would find it an interesting route in almost any weather, and they’re both ideal for beginners in calm weather. Much of the area is covered by water of knee deep or less, and is therefore never very rough. But because it is difficult to paddle when the water is too shallow to accommodate all of your blade, be cautious if the wind is from the west. A west wind will quickly carry you away from your launching place, but it may be difficult to work your way back. The area is suitable for general exploration. Landing is limited, however, with much of the area an historic preserve, and most included in the Island Bay National Wildlife Preserve and Wilderness. Most of the area forbids trespassing. Mangrove islands and long creeks extend north into the peninsula. You’ll likely see many small fish in this shallow water, and thus a thriving bird population. We watched a school of dolphins herding fish into the shallows around us between the two bridges. Pelicans attracted by the fish were panicked into the air by the swift-cruising dolphins as they circled the shoals of fish.
