From the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area boat ramp, the Orange Trail follows the tree- and shrub-lined Suwannee Canal northwest to the Canal Run shelter. Though not the most natural feature of the Okefenokee, the Suwannee Canal offers easy paddling, good wildlife viewing, and nice reflections on the water when the conditions are right. The 35- to 40-foot-wide channel of the canal is mostly clear of impeding vegetation and easy to paddle. Since it is 5 to 7 feet deep, only the severest of droughts cause it to become impassable. The sides of the canal are lined by a mix of trees and shrubs. Slash Pine, Pond Cypress, Loblolly Bay, and Dahoon Holly grow over a dense growth of Titi and Hurrah Bush. The clear, dark waters often reflect their images, creating the distinctly Okefenokee ambiance. Despite the traffic, it is still a good place to view alligators, aquatic turtles, Anhingas, Great Blue Herons, and Belted Kingfishers. Beyond the first 2 miles of the trail, public use diminishes rapidly. Hazards: Heat exhaustion, motorboats, airboats, alligators, and biting insects.
