For its entire length the trail lies within the confines of the tree-and shrub-lined canal. While not the most scenically varied of trails, the tannin-stained water provides marvelous reflections and easy paddling. Alligators, turtles, Great Blue Herons, Anhingas, and numerous warblers are just some of the wildlife to watch for. Since the canal is fairly deep (5 to 7 feet), only the most severe droughts cause the water levels to drop sufficiently for the trail to become impassable. Beginning at one of the most heavily visited points in the refuge, the first several miles of the trail are well used and sometimes crowded. Beyond mile 2 the number of visitors declines steadily, and only on the busiest of days will you encounter many people more than a few miles from the boat ramp. The entire section of trail is open to day-use paddling and motorboating. Hazards: Heat exhaustion, motorboats, airboats, alligators, and biting insects.
