Beginners and intermediate paddlers love this river. The scenery is beautiful, with plenty of interesting rock formations lining many of the banks. In the spring a variety of wildflowers, including the Cahaba lily, add color to the dense forest lining the banks. Approximately midway through the trip, a favorite swimming hole—McGuire’s Ford—gives you a chance to relax and enjoy the cool water. As for the ride itself, there are plenty of shoals and drops, and a fantastic 3-foot fall. It is unusual for a state to have two rivers with the same name, but Alabama does in the Little Cahaba River. The first is located east of Birmingham near Leeds and is floatable only seasonally. The second, and the one we describe here, is located southwest of Birmingham and is floatable most times of the year. This Little Cahaba is packed with fast shoals, deep pools, a couple of nice rapids, and a 3-foot fall that can be run even by beginners.
