This is a rocking little river at the right levels. The granite boulder-lined Elkahatchee features beautiful Class III rapids with some huge 4- and 5-foot drops and plenty of Class IIs that give you a chance to practice your maneuvering through the maze of boulders, down ledges, and waves. Many rivers of the state that feature white water paddling flow through limestone and sandstone formations, but the Elkahatchee is one of the few that travels through a bed of granite and granite boulders. Because of this and the 40-foot-per-mile gradient, this short stretch of creek provides some excellent white water paddling, with two distinct Class III rapids and a good smattering of Class IIs. All along the rocky trip, catalpa trees line the banks. You can occasionally spot ducks, great herons, turtles, and deer here. Located in Alexander City, the creek is bounded by Russell Pond to the north and Lake Martin to the south. Lake Martin is a 1,445-acre lake that is a favorite of sports enthusiasts and recreationists. Russell Pond is formed by a spillway-dam at its southern terminus, which presents a picturesque scene at the put-in.
