Paddling the waters of the Gulf of Mexico offers a real change of scenery from the typical river trip. The view and the wildlife is striking to say the least, and the options for sea kayaking are unlimited. One of our favorites is the Sand Island trip. The distant view consists mainly of open-water expanse meeting the sky. Along the horizon oil rigs, with their tower lights blinking on and off, can be seen. You will see pelicans, including the formerly endangered brown pelican, flying in formation and diving for fish. Hundreds upon hundreds of pelicans and seagulls hang out on the island and watch as you pass by. Marine fish of every type jump around your boat. And offshore you will most likely see dolphins traveling in groups breaching the water’s surface. On the island itself, the dunes are beautiful with the pristine white sand for which the Alabama Gulf Coast has become world renown. On top of the dunes, green and gold sea oats sway in the breeze. Depending on your time constraints and endurance, you can choose to paddle around the entire island or simply paddle partially up one side and back. Sand Island has a long crescent shape that extends about 3 miles southward from Dauphin Island.
