This trip is not for the neophyte navigator. The twisting turns and countless off-shooting bayous and inlets have caused many boaters in this area to become confused and lost, prompting search-and-rescue missions. If you are not completely confident in your experience and skills, you are better off taking a guide along. The variety of wildlife and vegetation are two of the features that makes this trip stand out. You’ll also have the opportunity to stop at Mound Island, the site of eighteen Native American religious ceremonial mounds, the largest of which rises 45 feet. This area is designated as a National Historic Landmark, and it is a crime to remove archaeological material without permission. The area is patrolled for this reason. Archaeological surveys show that tribes lived in the delta from at least 1500 B.C. The name Tensaw originates from Taensa, an Indian tribe that once lived on the shores of the Tensaw River. The Mobile-Tensaw River Delta is host to many special plants. Among some of the rare plants known to occur in this area are the green-fly orchid, southern rein orchid, tiny-leaved buckthorn, sarvis holly, and loblolly bay. During the float you’ll see cypress trees, blue-stem (saw) palmetto, and bamboo.
