The Johnstons River is perhaps the best-kept secret on the Island. Actually, there are two parts to the river. The lower part runs directly to the Hillsborough and therefore is tidal, mostly salty, and heavily silted at low tide. The upper part of the river, described here, is not tidal because of a dam, and this is its joyous gift to us. The dam was constructed to create a totally freshwater habitat. The river is deep and fresh, sheltered and very interesting. Very quickly you will paddle past a few houses on the banks and two substantial birch-bark tepees on your left. These shelters remind us that we are always paddling on historical Micmac rivers. Soon you will enter into a totally wild area of tall evergreen trees and high marsh grass. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
