This area is a bonanza for the canoe or kayak enthusiast. Its very name reflects our “good fortune” to be able to paddle the river and the bay. The area was named in the early 1750s by Acadian settlers to reflect its richness. Fortune River is a delight. This crystal-clear tidal river is bordered by quiet woods that shelter the paddler from the effects of the wind. You can explore the winding river for hours by heading upriver and then returning to the bay takeout. Or you can launch at the headwaters and explore Big Brook and the adjoining marshland. In the marsh you can still see the remnants of how the Acadians constructed dikes in the 1700s.The entire area is extremely quiet, which invites slow paddling and much listening. Even though the entire river is tidal, the upper reaches of the river can be paddled even in low tide. From Big Brook and the headwaters area, you can paddle downriver to the bridge or farther and then back again. The entire area is pastoral and invites a longer stay of paddling, walking, and touring. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
