With origins in the mountains of Canada's Yukon Territory, the Tatshenshini and Alsek rivers slice through the massive St. Elias and Fairweather mountain ranges, the largest nonpolar glaciated mountain system in the world. The Tatshenshini flows northwest and then bends southwest through the 6,000- to 8,000-foot-high Alsek Range, a subrange of the St. Elias. The Tat meets the Alsek in the Fairweather Range, and the combined river, now called the Alsek, flows southwesterly within a 1-to 3-mile-wide valley surrounded by the Fairweather Range.
