Beginning in Situk Lake, the Situk River flows southwesterly for 19 miles, ending in the Gulf of Alaska. Legendary for its spring and fall steelhead trout runs, the river also supports a summer-long influx of samlon, as well as a hefty rainbow trout run in the fall. The Situk is a small, braided, clearwater stream containing many tributaries and cross-channels characteristic of streams flowing across glacial outwash deposits. The gradient is slight, so the current is gentle. From Situk Lake, situated in an open meadow in the spruce forest, excellent views of the Brabazon Mountains and the St. Elias Range are available.
