The Mendenhall, with incredible views of the Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefield, is a popular spot for Juneau residents to hone their whitewater technique in the spring and summer and for cruise ship passengers visiting Juneau. Originating in Mendenhall Lake about 10 miles west of Juneau, the Mendenhall River flows southward about 5 miles, emptying into the Gastineau Channel. Mendenhall Glacier sits at the head of the lake and, with a 7,000-foot-high spine of Mountains and the Jillleau Icefield rising steeply above, offers a dramatic backdrop to the lake and river.
