The Tyone River makes a nice trip for families or novice paddlers who are experienced wilderness travelers. Rising in the vast lake-studded region southeast of the Susitna River, the Tyone River connects a series of lakes- Louise, Susitna, and Tyone- for about 20 miles, then flows as a 28-mile tributary of the Susitna. Susitna Lake has one large island, scattered small islands, and a long irregularly shaped peninsula. Paddling on the lakes can be dangerous if the wind picks up; paddle close to shore and watch for wind-generated waves. There are sport lodges and recreational cabins on the lakes.
