Originating at the tenninus of Talkeetna Glacier in the Talkeetna Mountains, this swift, silt-laden river flows northwest, then southwest, for more than 90 miles to its confluence with the Susitna River. Draining an area of 1,790 miles, the Talkeetna River is fed by several small clear tributaries. The river traverses forests of spruce and birch and offers an exciting and scenic float, with a dramatic canyon on the upper river. The upper Talkeetna is considered by some to be the premier wilderness whitewater trip in Alaska. If you plan to do any hiking, Yellowjacket Creek is a good place to start a trip, as the terrain offers good opportunities. Further downriver, vegetation hems in, discouraging land exploration.
