Portage Creek offers a short, swift paddle from Portage Lake to the Seward Highway through forest and past steep Mountains with hanging glaciers-a pleasant day trip from Anchorage when the weather is good. The stream braids and twists its way over gravel bars and around cutbanks as it flows through a deeply etched glacial valley, with the Chugach Mountains on one side and the Kenai Mountains on the other, offering dramatic looks at Explorer and Middle glaciers. On a sunny day, the views are breathtaking. But beware: often you can depart Anchorage on a beautiful sunny day and drive around Turnagain Arm only to find windy, rainy, whiteout conditions in Portage Valley. The clouds and storms from Prince William Sound spill over Portage Pass into the valley.
