The Thkakila offers a beautiful but all-too-short wilderness float for intermediate boaters with good wilderness skills in a splendid mountain setting in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Closely flanked by glaciers, 10,000-foot-high mountains, and perpendicular cliffs, the Tlikakila begins as glacier melt in the Mountains surrounding Lake Clark Pass and pours through a deep, narrow valley in the Alaska Range. Silty and swift throughout its 51-mile course, it is fed by two major tributaries, Glacier Fork and North Fork, and countless runoff streams, draining an area of 622 square miles.
