Beginning as glacier melt at Stony Glacier near the foot of Sled Pass, the Stony River flows south for 50 miles to a wide valley at the southern end of the Revelation Mountains, then swings to the northwest for another 140 miles. The Necons River empties into the Stony, and the Telaquana River joins it 20 miles downstream. Below the Telaquana, in a 1O-mile stretch, the river meanders sluggishly across a 200-yard-wide channel, moving at about 2 miles per hour. Then it cuts a series of scenic canyons in a 100-yard-wide channel over the course of 19 miles. The current speeds up to 5 to 7 miles per hour as the river drops over a couple miles of short Class II rapids.
