As the glaciers receded after the last ice age, they left behind deep depressions many miles long in Southwest Alaska. These depressions filled with water and now form a vast lake system through Katmai National Park and Preserve. Paddling the Savonoski River Loop, you have an opportunity to sample this rich lake and river system while exploring several interconnected waterways within the park. This trip should only be attempted by persons with intermediate skills who are experienced wilderness travelers and know how to travel in dense brown-bear territory.
