This an excellent river for families or novices, with experience in portaging, who want a taste of western Alaska-- especially those who enjoy fishing. The Nuyakuk River is a 43-mile tributary of the Nushagak River. The Nuyakuk begins at Ttkcltik Lake, the lowest of six large interconnected lakes. It flows east, then slightly southeast, to its confluence with the Nushagak about 65 miles from Dillingham. Deep and clear, with a moderate (3 to 4 miles per hour) current, the Nuyakuk has a gradient in the first 6 miles that averages 17 feet per mile. Thee sets of rapids come within these 6 miles, the last being a large Class IV to V cataract a half-mile long that requires portaging. Once past the rapids the river flattens, with a gradient averaging 1 to 2 feet per mile to the river's mouth.
