With headwaters rising in the Nushagak Hills, the Nushagak flows southwest 275 miles to Nushagak Bay, picking up tributaries, large and small, along the way. One of Alaska's largest and most productive clearwater systems, it offers a good family float for paddlers with wilderness camping experience and is especially interesting for people who would like to visit Yup'ik villages in Southwest Alaska. Scattered forests of spruce and hardwood line the river, with open tundra just beyond. While the upper river is remote, Native villages lie below the Nuyakuk River, so you are likely to meet others traveling on the Nushagak. The river flows past the villages of Koliganek, New Stuyahok, and Ekwok. Much of the land surrounding these villages is owned by Native corporations or is privately owned.
