Beginning as glacial meltwater on the northeast slope of Snowcap Mountain in the Alaska Range, the South Fork Kuskokwim flows north-northwest for 152 miles to its confluence with the North Fork, just above Medfra, to form the main Kuskokwim River. Draining an area of 3,070 miles, the South Fork begins as a raging torrent, swift and turbid. The gradient in the upper 50 miles is more than 30 feet per mile. Below here, the river gradually becomes a sluggish, meandering stream with a gradient of less than three feet per mile.
