Beginning in the Kaltag Mountains, the Unalakleet River flows 90 miles in a southwesterly direction to Norton Sound, just south of the village of Unalakleet. A clear, quiet, braided river, the Unalakleet flows through the Nulato Hills, a region forested in spruce and willow. Hiking is excellent in the vicinity of Old Woman Mountain and other mountains paralleling the area, where the vegetation is alpine tundra. Leaving the Nulato Hills, the river meanders through muskeg spruce in the low coastal region before reaching the village. The water consists of fastmoving riffles and pools and slow, meandering sections. The Iditarod Trail passes along part of the river, and several cabins and historic mail sites are nearby. It's possible to hike part of the Iditarod Trail.
