Tongass Narrows is Ketchikan’s “main street.” This channel is used by cruise ships, commercial tugs, fishing boats, and floatplanes. Guided kayak trips operate on the Narrows from downtown Ketchikan, and there are some good places here to launch for cruising the waterfront; crossing the Narrows to Pennock Island, Black Sand Beach, and Gravina Island; or heading up to Totum Bight. Kayaking in Tongass Narrows is not exactly a wilderness experience, but it is of cultural interest. However, across the Narrows there are scenic spots, and in minutes you can quickly “get away from it all.”
