This is one of the most popular summer hikes in the Eastern Sierra and for good reason. If you and your dog have dreamt of driving up a paved road to 10,000 feet, hopping out of the car, and following a gentle graded trail along streams linking lakes and meadows with a granite peak backdrop, this hike is your dream come true. Elevation and acclimatization aside (trailhead is at 10,000 feet), the Little Lakes Valley is the easiest hike to one, if not the, most breathtaking setting in the High Sierra. How often do you get to drive up a paved road on the doorstep of a wilderness area to witness and bask in the beauty that typically requires days of roughing it through the backcountry or miles of rocking and bouncing on a rutted, barely passable remote Forest Service road? John Muir Wilderness established by the Wilderness Act of 1964, is named after the Sierra’s most passionate advocate and covers over 100 miles of trails showcasing some of the High Sierra’s most iconic landscape along the eastern escarpment.
