This dirt trail tracing the eastern shore of Bucks Lake (a natural-looking reservoir cradled by forested slopes of pine and fir) on the way to the Mill Creek Campground makes an excellent jaunt for hikers and pooches who long for a pleasant, generally flat hike with lots of opportunities for cooling dips where the trail hugs the shoreline. The pine, fir, and aspen woodland provides shade with good views of the lake, and spring wildflowers give the fern groves a splash of color. Although Bucks Lake is a human-made reservoir with a dam, it is surprisingly natural looking and not overdeveloped. The west shore has a couple of lodges, marinas, campgrounds, and summer cabins. Even motorized recreation on Bucks Lake (motor boats and water skiing) isn’t the intrusive nuisance you would expect. The east shore of the lake is pristine, and the Mill Creek Trail is a lovely trek.
