This ultimate Wild Rabbit experience ascends the long south ridge from the Anza-Borrego Desert, passing over Villager Peak en route. It is one of the test pieces for serious Southern California day hikers. This extremely strenuous hike features a remarkable variety of cactus and yucca. It is best done in late fall or early spring when the temperatures are cool. At this time of year, the hike typically begins before dawn and ends after dark, so a headlamp is essential. Fortunately, route ?nding is reasonably easy because the hike follows the top of the ridge. A full moon aids walking and makes the trip even more enjoyable. The hike is completely dry. Bring at least 6 quarts of water, more for a warm day. Because of the plethora of spiky vegetation, long pants are advisable. The trip can be done as an overnight backpack, camping on top of Villager Peak, if you are willing to haul an enormous quantity of water.
