The Sawmill Trail ascends the north face of the Santa Rosas. It provides excellent views of the northern Santa Rosas, San Jacinto, and the desert from Palm Springs southward. It starts in the desert and ends in the high mountains, so hike in the spring or fall, when it’s cool at the trailhead but the Santa Rosa Mountain Road is clear of snow.
