The Jo Pond Trail is one of the highlights of the Coachella Valley. Starting in Palm Canyon, it ascends the Garnet Ridge to Cedar Spring, providing astounding views of the Coachella Valley, Salton Sea, and San Jacinto Mountains, especially when the peaks are cloaked in their snowy winter mantle. Parts of the hike are on shady north slopes that hold snow longer than the surrounding hills, so an ice axe and crampons may be necessary in midwinter. Despite what you might imagine, the Jo Pond Trail does not visit any standing bodies of water. Rather, it was named for a member of the Desert Riders who was a strong proponent of trails in the Coachella Valley. A complication of this trip is that your vehicle must be out of the canyon by 5 p.m. when the gate closes. This is a long hike and you’ll be in hot water if you miss the closing time. Watch the time carefully, or park outside the toll gate.
