Fern Canyon is noted for its vertical wall dripping with moisture that supports hanging ferns in the midst of the arid desert. This trip explores the canyon and also tours the cactus-studded slopes above, and it offers a great view into the oasis of Palm Canyon. The Fern Canyon and Vandeventer Trails are well maintained and well marked. From the Trading Post at Hermits Bench, head east and down through the parking lot. Go to the gated lower parking lot, around the hill, left to the trailhead (at the north end of the lower lot). Follow the signs for the Fern Canyon Trail down to the stream crossing and up into the mouth of the canyon. In a quarter mile, pass the junction of the Alexander and Victor Trails. Follow the Fern Canyon Trail east into the hills, up a steep incline, and then back into Fern Canyon to view the hanging ferns in 1 mile.
