This trip is more of a saunter than a hike, a place to contemplate the gifts of the natural world and brie?y forget civilization’s tribulations. The area is of special biological interest as well since it is one of the last remaining populated habitats in the San Bernardino National Forest for the federally endangered mountain yellow-legged frog. This frog was historically one of the most common frogs in Southern California and used to be found in virtually every year-round stream in the mountains, but has declined in 99% of its range in the last couple of decades. Due to the presence of this sensitive species and others, the Forest Service asks visitors to avoid wading, rock hopping, fishing, and engaging in other water play within 10 feet of the creek edge. Watch for posted signs in the area with the latest information or check with the Idyllwild Ranger Station. Wear boots with good tread and ankle support.
