Galena Peak at 9,324 feet rises precipitously above the head of Mill Creek Canyon. It is the most rugged-appearing peak in the San Bernardinos, standing in marked contrast to the higher but rounded summits of the nearby San Gorgonio Wilderness. No trails approach its rugged upper ramparts, and you must scramble high over loose boulders and steep rock slopes to stand on its crown. Part of the Mill Creek headwall has slid away recently, making the trip more tedious than it was a few years ago. You must make a trailless, loose uphill scramble from the head of Mill Creek to the saddle that divides the headwaters of Mill Creek from those of the Whitewater River—known by the curious name of Mill Creek Jumpo?. You need cross-country experience and will appreciate boots with good tread.
