This area was impacted by the 2015 Lake Fire. As of 2016, the trail remains closed. Check with the Mill Creek Ranger Station at 909-382-2882 to determine if the trail has reopened. San Gorgonio Mountain crowns all of Southern California. No other peak south of the Sierra Nevada rises high enough to challenge its 11,502-foot elevation. Gleaming white in winter snows and somber gray during summer months, its massive granite bulk can be seen for 100 miles in many directions. The great hogback mountain is the culminating hump of the 10,000-plus-foot, 7-mile-long, sky-piercing ridge that dominates the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Gravelly, boulder-strewn slopes and broad, shallow draws slant downward from the summit crest, dropping far into shadowy canyons. Snow patches linger well into the summer months. The air is crisp with the chill of elevation. The sky is deep blue, free of the urban-generated murkiness that clogs lower elevations.
